What you can see and experience in the area
The Dutch province of Zeeland offers more than just sun, sea, forest, and dunes. With its abundance of water, it provides a plethora of activities. We are happy to give you some tips for a fantastic day out:
Zoutelande
Zoutelande is located directly on the coast on the southwest side of the Walcheren peninsula. The beach of Zoutelande, with its characteristic wooden groynes and high dunes, is one of the few beaches in the Netherlands facing south. This creates a unique climate, earning it the nickname the ‘Zeeuwse Riviera’.
Near Zoutelande lies one of the highest dunes in the Netherlands, as well as the highest point of Walcheren. From the top of this dune, which stands 54 meters above sea level, you have a magnificent view of the island, the North Sea, and the Western Scheldt. In the dunes, you can visit a bunker from World War II.
Zoutelande offers various cozy cafes, restaurants, and beach pavilions with pleasant terraces. There is always something going on in Zoutelande, such as the cheerful weekly tourist market on Tuesdays, traditional ring riding, and ‘Jazz by the Sea’ in September. In October, be sure to come and see the finish of one of the most beautiful sporting events in the Netherlands: the challenging Kustmarathon, with its thousands of participants.
Domburg
The cozy town of Domburg is the third oldest seaside resort in the Netherlands. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, it was popular among the nobility and royalty. Domburg is also known for the painters Jan Toorop and Piet Mondriaan, as you can see in the Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum for Visual Arts. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a beautiful 9-hole golf course in the dunes.
Middelburg (approximately 10 kilometers from Zoutelande)
Middelburg is the cozy capital of Zeeland. Here you will find many charming shopping streets and alleys with a mix of national chains and local businesses where you are sure to find what you are looking for. Middelburg is also known for its many monumental buildings, including the Lange Jan, the Abbey Complex, the beautiful Town Hall, and the Klovenierdoelen. Middelburg boasts an impressive 1,100 (!) national monuments.
Zeeuws Museum
The Zeeuws Museum offers a wealth of information on the history of Zeeland. Among other things, it displays a series of unique and world-famous wall tapestries depicting naval battles from the 16th century. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum often hosts innovative exhibitions.
Middelburg Boat Tour
Experience Middelburg from the water by taking a boat tour on an open boat. www.rondvaartmiddelburg.nl
Climbing the Lange Jan
From the dunes in Zoutelande, you cannot miss the ‘Lange Jan’, part of the Abbey Complex in Middelburg. With its height of 90.5 meters, it is one of the ten tallest towers in the Netherlands. The 207 steps to the top are worth the effort, as you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of Walcheren. On clear days, you can even see the surrounding islands. For more information, visit www.langejanmiddelburg.nl.
Veere Lake Boat Tour
Dijkhuizen Shipping has three passenger ships at its disposal. You can choose from various boat tours, including:
• In July and August, a trip along the Vlissingen boulevard with the statue of Michiel de Ruyter to observe seals on the Hooge Platen.
• From May to September, a cruise from Middelburg through the Walcheren Canal for a tour of Veere Lake. You can also start this tour from the picturesque town of Veere. www.rederij-dijkhuizen.nl
Nieuwdorp
In the village of Nieuwdorp, you will find the Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland, which tells the tumultuous history of Zeeland during World War II. The museum focuses in particular on the ‘Battle of the Scheldt’, the longest and most intense battle on Dutch soil. The outcome of this crucial operation directly determined the end of World War II in Western Europe. www.bevrijdingsmuseumzeeland.nl
Oosterscheldekering and Neeltje Jans
The impressive Oosterscheldekering, built in 1986, is a part of the Delta Works and serves as a flood protection barrier. It is also a 9-kilometer-long road connection between Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland as part of the N57. This unique water barrier in the world is a storm surge barrier that can be closed with 27 large gates during severe storms, preventing high water from entering the Oosterschelde.
In the middle of the Oosterscheldekering, you will find Neeltje Jans with its Topshuis. Here, you can discover amazing exhibitions and stormy attractions. You can also board a boat tour to view the Delta Works from the water. In short, take a day off and come with family and/or friends to Deltapark Neeltje Jans! www.neeltjejans.nl
Veere
The picturesque town of Veere dates back to the early 13th century. As you stroll around, you will feel like you have stepped back into the Middle Ages. The most notable landmark is the Grote Kerk (Great Church) from 1348, which was used as a military hospital by Napoleon's soldiers from 1811. The Town Hall of Veere, the Scottish Houses at the quay, and the Campveerse Toren are definitely worth a visit. Did you know that a large part of the movie Michiel de Ruyter was filmed here?
You can also take the bike and pedestrian ferry here. It sails between Veere and Kamperland on Noord-Beveland and vice versa. www.rondje-pondje.nl
Vlissingen
Boulevard
The boulevard is the undisputed calling card of Vlissingen. Two kilometers long, it forms the boundary between land and water. Lined with terraces, hotels, and delicious restaurants, it features art, statues, and sculptures alongside antique cannons.
Zeeuws Maritiem MuZEEum
On July 6, 2002, the Zeeuws Museum opened its maritime doors to the public. The beautifully restored Lampsinshuis from 1642 forms the heart of this new museum. In a lively manner, you will discover the grand Zeeuws maritime history from the 16th to the 20th century, presented in four themes: water, work, glory, and adventure. For more information, visit www.muzeeum.nl.
Westkapelle
Lighthouses
Westkapelle is known for its lighthouse, the ‘Hoge Licht’, which is visible upon entering the town. This tower is the remnant of a Gothic church that was destroyed by fire in the 18th century. In the 19th century, a beacon was placed on top, allowing it to function as a lighthouse. On the dike, you will find the second lighthouse of Westkapelle, the distinctive red-and-white ‘Iron Tower’.
Westkappelse Zeedijk
Another sight to see is the Westkappelse Zeedijk, a five-kilometer-long sea defense made of basalt stone in the dune row that protects the island of Walcheren from the sea.
Polderhuis Dijk- en Oorlogsmuseum
At the Polderhuis, history comes to life. From living on Walcheren during the Iron Age, the Roman and Viking periods, and the Golden Age, to the war in Westkapelle and its surroundings, the bombings, the destruction, and the reconstruction. Walk through history past interesting objects and replicas, view numerous photos and videos, and admire the impressive dike and sea from the observation tower. www.polderhuiswestkapelle.nl

Ooststraat 10a, 4357 BE Domburg, Netherlands
The museum takes its name from the art collector, anthroposophist and agricultural pioneer Marie Tak van Poortvliet (1871-1936), who in the early twentieth century had a villa built in Domburg and spent many summers there in the company of the painter Jacoba van Heemskerck (1876-1923). Zeeland seemed to naturally to attract artists, this attraction was enhanced by the unsophisticated beauty of the surroundings, the special light along the coast and its reflection over the land have inspired many poets, composers and writers, but also – and above all – painters.

Parking Beach Neeltje Jans, Vrouwenpolder, Netherlands
Neeltje Jans is a flat, chop, small and medium waves spot. It is a kitesurfing spot for riders of any level. The water theme park here is a well-known visitor attraction, but only a few know that there is also a fantastic surf spot on the island north of the barrier. At high tide, you can rip the wide surf belt against a lonely dune backdrop, but don't go too far out because of the current! At low tide a big shallow area forms, ideal for kiting – although the approach of over 500m will probably ensure that purists remain among themselves here in the future.

The Zeeland Bridge has been a beautiful icon of Zeeland since 1965. For enthusiasts who have an eye for major human interventions in the landscape, built between 1963 and 1965 this is an example of impressive engineering work. For lovers of nice panoramas, the view to the left and right over the Oosterschelde is worthwhile if you drive the 6 km over it.
